Obama: Unemployment likely to ‘tick up’ for several months

President Barack Obama met this morning with Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende.

“I don’t have a crystal ball. We have looked at a lot of the economic data that’s coming out right now. We have seen some stabilization in the financial markets, and that’s good, because that means that companies can borrow and banks are starting to lend again,” Obama said on the issue of the economy.

More than 2 million jobs have been lost since Congress passed Obama’s $787 billion economic stimulus package. The unemployment rate stands at 9.5 percent, the highest in 26 years.

“My expectation is that we will probably continue to see unemployment tick up for several months,” said Obama.

Biden: Banks beginning to recapitalize

Vice President Joe Biden today discussed the Recovery Act during a visit to the former American Can Building in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Jobless rate climbs to 26-year high

WASHINGTON (AP) - Employers cut a larger-than-expected 467,000 jobs in June, driving the unemployment rate up to a 26-year high of 9.5 percent, suggesting that the economy's road to recovery will be bumpy.

The Labor Department report, released Thursday, showed that even as the recession flashes signs of easing, companies likely will want to keep a lid on costs and be wary of hiring until they feel certain the economy is on a solid ground.

June's payroll reductions were deeper than the 363,000 that economists expected.

Biden: We’ll rewrite the story of manufacturing in America

Vice President Joe Biden speaks at an event at Willard and Kelsey Solar in Perrysburg, Ohio, to promote American manufacturing.

“Thank you for calling Maine…”

A new call center in a vacant space in the Auburn Mall is a nice shot in the arm for a state that could use new jobs. TD Bank announced the plans for expanded call center today – with the promise of 200 immediate jobs and potential for more.

Maine Gov. John Baldacci noted: β€œ(TD Bank CEO) Bharat Masrani and I had breakfast together a few years ago where he talked about the reorganizations and acquisitions taking place within the company,” Governor Baldacci said. β€œHe assured me that in the end it would work out very well for Maine. I am here to thank him not only for making that commitment, but honoring that commitment to the State of Maine.”

The new call center will be located in a vacant space within the Auburn Mall. The facility will encompass 60,000 square-feet and bee LEED (Leadership in Energy and Efficient Design) certified, with environmentally friendly features including lighting and climate controls, water-efficient irrigation and use of recycled wood. TD has a 10-year lease on the property and will begin $16 million in renovations later this year.

Call centers have been a booming business (with a couple of bumps in the road, such as the closing of MBNA facilities when the company consolidated with Bank of America) for Maine.

And in this economy – it’s tough to hang up when opportunity rings, even if the jobs don’t always replace the higher-paying manufacturing work the state has lost in recent years.

Patrick tells MIT grads ‘crisis is a platform for change’

(NECN: Cambridge, Mass.) – Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick delivered the 143rd commencement address at MIT this morning.

“We are that simple idea that through hard work and tenacity…each of us has a chance at the American story,” said Patrick. “Well, that American story is at risk today.”

“Crisis is a platform for change,” Patrick told the graduates — as the American economy continues to struggle.

The Labor Department today is reporting that the jobless rate climbed to 9.4 percent last month — the highest in more than a quarter-century.

The job market is sagging, but that doesn’t seem to be holding back the graduating class of 2009. When it comes to finding a job, they’re on pace with classes from the past five years, according to a study by New England-based Experience.com.

Experience found 17% of this year’s college graduates have received job offers. That’s down only slightly from previous years. In 2004, 18% of college seniors reported having an offer in hand; in 2005 that number was 25%; in 2006, 20% and in 2007 it was 22%.

Tonight on Business Day Experience.com founder and CEO, Jenny Floren will have detatils on the hiring scene and advice for students still searching for that first job. Plus — we’ll look at the gap between supply (new grads) and demand. Are universities producing the skill sets employers want and need?

That’s tonight at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., on Business Day.
