Reader’s Digest Goes Chapter 11

Word today that the publisher of Reader’s Digest is going chapter 11 brought back a flood of memories.
RD was the perfect size. It fit in your pocket. The articles were just right. Looking to kill 5 minutes? The RD had an article for you.
It was perfect material for a young reader. True life adventure stories, science reports, corny jokes and the Word Power quiz. I recall how irritating it was when somebody in the family circled the right answers before I’d taken a stab at it.
The internet, declining circulation, fewer ads – RD has been hit by the all too common set of problems that beset print these days.
The Reader’s Digest Association is not going away. It’s restructuring $1.6 billion in debt. I hope it pulls through.
